Recently, the incidence of pressure sores has been increased, due to the increased number of patients with central nervous system injuries after traffic and industrial accidents or with long term loss of consciousness after drug and CO poisoning.
Authors reviewed 28 patients who had received surgical treatment for pressure tore in Chonnam National University Hospital during the past 5 years.
The result was at follows.
1) The ratio between male and female was 2.1 : 1.
2) The most common age groups were in 2nd and 5th decade.
3) On the etiologic distribution, trauma (57%), CO intoxication (14%), Alcohol and drug intoxication (11%), Previous radiation therapy (11%), Psychosis and CNS disease were ordered.
4) Locations of pressure sores were ordered at follows; Sacral region (33%), trochanteric region (22%), ischial region (9%).
5) For the methods of operations, total thigh flaps were performed in 2 cases, myocutaneout flaps in 24 cases, muscle flap in 1 case, skin flaps in 14 cases, skin graft in 19 cases and primary closures in 7 cases.
6) Postoperative complication rate revealed 19% (11 of 58 operation sites) ; Flap tip necrosis in 3 sites, wound infection in 3 sites, wound disruption in 3 sites, lots of skin graft in 1 site and recurrence of sore in 1 site.
7) On bacteriologic examination prior to surgery, the cultured organisms were found at follows; Staphylococcus in 14 Patients, E. Coli in 7, Pseudomonas in 7, Streptococcus in 6, Proteus in 4, Klebsiella in 4 and others etc..
